Don't attempt to eat at Sputnik (because it will only be an ATTEMPT)

Posted bybakerhoodon 1/18/2009

Listen, please, please DON'T go to eat at sputnik. if you are going to drink mimosas or bloody marys or any other alcoholic beverage then you will probably have better luck at this hipster spot filled with apathetic jerks. i've attempted to have a meal at sputnik probably 4 times, thinking each time 'oh, no, it won't be as bad as it was last time. they'll serve me in less than an hour and a half for sure'' and everytime i think this--i'm wrong. in my most recent attempt to prove myself wrong about the TERRIBLE service at sputnik, i waited two hours for food and then had three of my party's entrees 'comped' in a lame attempt at my forgiveness. in fact, just tonight i though, wouldn't the noodle bowl from sputnik be great right now? Sure enough, i called to ask if they make this bowl with rice or wheat noodles and guess what? After waiting ten minutes on the phone, they hung it up. PLEASE do yourself a favor and don't go eat there. let the hipsters breed and consume in peace until their little hang out dies out.

Mmmmm

I go here fairly often and it would have gotten all 5 stars from me, but the service is always slow. I love taking people here, but am embarassed by how long it takes to get service. The food is soo soo good. I do wish they'd bring back the veggie burger though, it was one of the best. They have a killer grilled cheese (seriously) and some amazing creative sandwiches and brunch. HAppy Hour... Go on a Saturday or Sunday morning from 11-3 they have bottomless mimosas for $5 and $3 bloody mary's (not bottomless). Great music, not the typical bar music. A very eclectic feel. Free WiFi. Oh, and a great place to people watch. :) Try it out. It's right on Broadway so if you feel like a wander after a few mimosas you can drop by a cool book store or the enormous Goodwill thrift shop.

High Dive used to be a good Dive

Can you say Emo's with attitude problems? Service is bad, most band are really bad. It was better when it was 7 south and just a plain old dive bar with edgy bands. I think this Emo crowd is going to feel just as stupid as the break dancers of the mid-80's someday. Comb your hair and loose the tight pants mr hip.

Weekend Hangover Brunch

Posted bydenverbcon 2/21/2008

Sputnik is located on the south end of Broadway, or as some like to refer to it: ?SO BO.? The bar/restaurant is laden with retro decor, accentuating the mildly attractive, overtly tortured, Denver hipster crowd who frequent it. Anxious to try out the ?Weekend Hangover Brunch,? The DBC (Denver Brunch Club) walked in only to be greeted by?no one. Apparently the bohemian work philosophies of the costumers who patron Sputnik have spilled over to the management and staff. One cannot hope for the luxury of a host or waiting list and customers must actually loom over those already dining in hopes to snag the next open spot. It was a little over an hour before our party of six was able to claim a red pizza hut-like leather booth. Once seated, it took 20 minutes to flag down what appeared to be the only server on staff. It took another 10 minutes to actually get the drinks, which poses the proverbial question, ?Are bottomless mimosas really bottomless if there is no one to refill them?? We had to hunt down menus, which proved to be a difficult task, but still somewhat easier than tracking down our waitress to actually put the food order in. After a total of maybe 2-21/2 hours, plates were finally placed beside our empty champagne flutes and coffee cups. Although we had nothing to wash it down with, the food was hot, simple, and delicious. To the waitress? credit, she did bring out the round of waters requested upon first sitting down after she cleared our empty plates?what???? The entire experience took up about 31/2. All in all, Sputnik failed to launch, however I anticipate a future visit where I?ll take advantage of the bar seating, which seems to lends itself to the whole mimosa refill thing.

What's up with the waitstaff?

I go to Sputnik all the time. It's a few blocks from my house and open late, with a pretty good menu. Most of the sandwiches are tasty, as are the brunch items. There's plenty on the menu, however, that is imaginative but something just gets lost in the execution. You cannot beat the $5 bottomless mimosas for getting tanked on a Sunday morning. That being said, the staff here is appalling. Food, drinks and the check usually take forevs. Whenever I open a tab, I'm invariably given my bill with some else's credit card. Most of the servers are pretty condescending, which is interesting considering they've got a collective IQ comparable to a sack of hammers or perhaps a box of hair. There you go. Take what you will.
