Denver's Best Pizza

Bring on Another Slice

Seriously, who doesn't love pizza? Okay, love is a strong word. Maybe the question should be, “Who wouldn't eat a slice of pizza were it put in front of them?” But that's beside the point; these restaurants have some of the best pizza in our city. Pizza so good that it might be the only thing you want to eat ever again.

1. Marco's Coal-Fired Pizzeria

One of the newest restaurants to spring up in our city, Marco's Coal-Fired Pizzeria has quickly taken the title of the best pizza restaurant in town. It's more than just professional service and the delicious pies that make the pizzeria great (though Marco's has both), there's a true culinary passion that is simply unmatched.

Neapolitan pizzas are Marco's specialty, with wonderfully thin crispy crusts and truly fresh toppings, including a delicious fresh red sauce and local produce. What really finishes every pizza off is the oven: a real Italian handmade brick contraption which infuses each pie with a smoky, wood-fired flavor. Sit out on the patio, complete with a fire pit, when temperatures are comfortable and enjoy the ultimate Denver pizza establishment. Just don't look up, broken and boarded windows on the upper story remind you that this is Five Points, not LoDo.

2. The Walnut Room

The Walnut Room doesn't seem to be quite sure of what it is: Restaurant? Bar? Live music venue? In the early evening you might see a few loners huddled along the bar with their beers, a young couple gorging on pizza and a few techs setting up the sound system for that night's performers. But this is about the pizza, and music lover or no, the pizza at The Walnut Room is worth the strange dining atmosphere.

Huge thin crust slices, literally dripping with cheese and toppings, come in a cardboard box without any kind of utensil or plate. Eating a slice becomes a game in weight balancing and damage control. The pizza options are diverse and include strange combinations like walnuts with pesto or jalapenos with green olives that work surprisingly well together. Pizzas are also available for delivery or take-out, but it's worth trying to eat in the bar at least once. Just stock up on napkins and dig in.

3. Buenos Aires Pizzeria

Often overlooked due to the strange combination that Argentinean cuisine and an Italian dish would seem to be, Buenos Aires Pizzeria has one of the most unique culinary experiences to be found in our city. The combinations of ingredients and flavors that the Five Points restaurant offers are like nothing else to be found. Using ingredients like oranges and coconuts, bacon and corn, hearts of palm and blue cheese, dishes are created that revel in the fusion of diverse items. To ease the way into the hearty meal, Buenos Aires Pizzeria has a number of empanadas that serve as excellent appetizers and the tasty flavored gelatos made in-house are delicious treats.

4. Sazza

While most pizza restaurants tend to at least pick a general direction as far as ingredient choices, Sazza insistently spreads its menu options across the whole globe of culinary traditions. From the staunchly American cheese-burger pizza to the European French onion pizza to the Mexican-inspired chicken enchilada pizza, Sazza takes a dip into the traditions and specialties of many countries and many cultures. This variety makes for some spectacular pizzas as well as some misses at the Greenwood Village restaurant, but it's an adventure and a chance worth taking.

5. Oblio's Pizzeria

Less adventurous with their pizzas than some of the other joints on this list, Oblio' s Pizzeria understands its neighborhood crowd. They get that children don't usually like to explore new tastes, and Park Hill has a large number of families with youngsters as part and parcel. The pizzas at Oblio's match the demographic, and they're so well made that staying with the traditional doesn't matter.

Even though you might not find some of the more unusual toppings that a pizza might sport, Oblio's still has plenty of variety in what is available. Different crust options (thin, regular and deep dish) cater to all tastes, including those of staunch Chicagoans and New Yorkers who are even less adventurous with their pizza than kids.
