Keystone, Colorado
Bustling with activity during the ski season, Keystone is no less action-packed during the summer. In these warm months, Keystone Mountain opens up 55 miles of its ski runs for mountain bikers, offering downhill adventure that ranges from merely pulse-pounding to nearly terrifying. Thanks to the Snake River and its surrounding lush valley, Keystone also offers some great golf courses and these same waters also provide thrilling whitewater rafting and superb fly-fishing. Kids can keep active with anything from showing off tricks at the skate park to exploring the deep with guided mine tours. Activities like horseback rides and just hiking the mountains provide great sights and fun exercise for all ages.
Festivals of many types take place all summer, and one of the best events is the Keystone Blues Festival and Art Show, which features great music, food and fun for the whole family. Other popular annual events include the Keystone Bluegrass and Beer Festival and the Keystone Wine, Jazz and Sculpture Festival. For a great culinary experience on a budget, make it out for the Taste of Keystone festival, where some of the best restaurants in town offer sumptuous samples for a low cost.
During the rest of the season, kick off the day with breakfast at the Sunshine Café in Silverthorne, about eight miles distant from the village. For a midday breather, drop by the Inxpot coffee shop for a filling lunch. After a day exploring the town, truly indulge with a once-in-a-lifetime meal at Alpenglow Stube, one of the top restaurants in the state. The cozy lodge and gourmet German-inspired meal offers welcome relaxation and nourishment, along with a supremely romantic experience.
The Vail/Eagle County Airport (EGE) is about as far from Keystone as Denver; driving from the city to the resort will likely be quicker than flying across the mountains and driving back east. There are some buses that provide transportation between Denver and Keystone, but the most preferred form of travel is via private vehicle.
